Q&A: Google Adwords Question. How can I track which keyword a person used to complete a form on my website?

Question by michaelnaeseth: Google Adwords Question. How can I track which keyword a person used to complete a form on my website?
I have a lead generation service and I want to be able to find out which keywords people use to get to my website and complete my online form. I know I can check which keywords were clicked through adwords, but I get tons of clicks and not so many form submissions. How can I narrow that down to the keywords that resulted in a form submission?

Here’s a general answer, but you’ll have to do some googling to find specific how-to information. You’ll want to do 4 things:

1. Set up google analytics for your site, if you haven’t already. Link it to your adwords account. This will tell you which ads are bringing visitors to your site. You will be able to see the keyword you specified in adwords that matched on what the visitor searched on, but you will not be able to see what the visitor actually typed.
2. Change the page that your form is on so that when a visitor clicks the submit button, it logs a tracking entry in google analytics. (Search for info on how to set up onclick events to run javascript pageTracker._trackPageview.)
3. In your google analytics account profile, set up a goal to measure clicks on the submit button, by counting those onclick events that your page is now tracking. (Search for info on analytics goals.)
4. Also in your google analytics account profile, set up a filter to put the full referral path into the User Defined Value field. (Search for info on full referral path, and user defined value.) This will allow you to see what the visitor *really* searched for.

Other notes…
– When you set up goals and filters in an analytics profile, it takes at least 24 hours for the collected data to start showing up. So be patient while you’re testing.
– It’s a good idea to make a second analytics profile for testing. After you get the filter and goal working, you can repeat what you did in your “official” profile.
– In analytics, look under Traffic Sources > Adwords to see your adwords traffic stats.
– In analytics, look under Visitors > User Defined to see your full referral paths
– In analytics, look under Goals > Reverse Goal Path to see what visitors did on your site before clicking your submit button
– Learn to make custom reports in analytics, so you can see the information you need in reports that are designed like you want them

go to googles keyword tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal then on the left you will see an area that says website content put your website URL in the box then click the circle and it will automatically tell you which keywords you should focus on . Also honestly on page SEO is important but not nearly as important as the links coming into your site . So if you have alot of links coming into your website that have a high page ranking and the content on the sites that contain your link are relevant to the content on your website then you will quickly be ranked so there is both on and off site SEO . The 3 quickest methods for links and SEO traffic are Press Release , Video , Forums and Articles I can show you that I won’t charge anything just visit my blog

There are many free tools available to SEO site analysis. But what you want………..have you done seo then want to review & analysis your site or you have a site on which no seo work has been done intentionally. Google webmaster’s tool & Google analytics is two such great tools.

There are a few things that you should know when you are looking to analyze your website.

First understand if you have choosen the right keywords for your website. You can use various tools to do that.

Once you have done this then see how your website is being optimized, in the sense if you have all the right ingredients in your site that co-relates with your keyword goal. I recommend seocentro.com to do this research.

If you have completed this step, add statcounter and google analytics into your website and start monitoring the kind of traffic you are getting. If you can identify whats working, then you should analyze why it is working. Then mature to the step of whats not working and then when you know why other things are working you can make the non-working keywords to work.

If you are doing Google Adwords, you can perfectly analyse what kind of keywords are most searched and their cost. You can understand the pattern of search from a consumer stand point and implement those things into your SEO campaign.

Getting a huge amount of traffic to your website may be necessary in ensuring your online business success however this is just one part of the equation and the other part is analyzing this large traffic. Knowing where the traffic came from what persons are looking for in your site, or how long they’re staying in your page are information that you simply need an accurate analysis of.

    1. No tables
    2. Use CSS either margins, or use position:relative. DO NOT use position:absolute, because if you do, it may only look right for you.

  2. Aerivium says:

in css you can use float, position, margin, padding, you can still use divs for this and id advise it as they often make structuring of the page a lot easier

you can use position:absolute but you just need to know what you are doing. its good practice to check several of the most common browsers as they can sometimes react differently to your css, firefox,ie7 and ie6 are generally considered the the most important, but doesnt hurt to try opera, chrome, possibly even ie8(ugh), but you may find that ie6 ruins your life

Edit: Oh and tables are evil and only should ever be used if you are actually displaying tabular data, not for layout
